How to use this library

Written for the decisions LGBTQ+ households actually face

General personal finance content assumes a set of legal defaults that do not reliably apply to queer households. It assumes the person at your bedside will be recognized, that the child you are raising is legally yours in every state, that your family will inherit by operation of law, and that the only reason to think about where you live is the cost of housing. Each of those assumptions is optional for us, and each one has a dollar value attached when it fails.

So this library is organized around decisions rather than topics. The estate guides exist because beneficiary designations override wills and a stale form is the single most expensive paperwork error we see. The tax guides exist because two high earners filing jointly can owe thousands more than the same two incomes would separately, and because the 2026 rules under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act changed the standard deduction, the SALT cap, and the estate exemption at once. The family-building guides exist because adoption, reciprocal IVF, and surrogacy differ by a factor of ten in cost and by years in timeline, and the choice is usually made before anyone models the cash flow.

A reasonable sequence for most people: confirm your beneficiary designations this week, since it is free and takes twenty minutes. Put the five core documents in place next, because they govern what happens in the situations you cannot schedule. Then work on the optimization — filing status, equity compensation timing, Roth conversion windows, account location — because optimization on top of an unprotected foundation is just a more efficient way to lose.

Everything here is educational and general by design. It does not know your income, your state, your equity grant, or your family structure, and those four things change most answers. Use the guides to get oriented and to ask better questions; use an actual plan when the decisions start interacting.
