Military LGBTQ+ Financial Planning for San Diego LGBTQ+ households
San Diego has one of the largest LGBTQ+ military and veteran populations in the country. TRICARE for same-sex spouses, SBP joint-life vs. single-life elections, VA disability, BAH, and a Thrift Savings Plan alongside a civilian partner's 401(k) — the planning surface is entirely different from a generic dual-income household.

Post-Obergefell, TRICARE and DEERS enrollment cover same-sex spouses on the same terms as any other military family, and VA benefits including survivor pensions apply equally. But the actual paperwork — updated DEERS enrollment, second-parent adoption where kids are involved, and SBP election forms — has to be filed correctly for the coverage to actually apply when needed.
The SBP (Survivor Benefit Plan) election at retirement is one of the single most consequential and irrevocable decisions an LGBTQ+ service member makes. Single-life pays more monthly but leaves a same-sex spouse with nothing at death; joint-and-survivor protects the partner at a real monthly cost. That decision has to be planned against the couple's other assets, not chosen from a form.
Add a civilian partner's 401(k), HSA, and potentially equity comp on top, and you have a household plan that no generic military financial counselor and no generic civilian advisor is fully equipped to handle. Aequitas is fee-only, virtual-first, and works with LGBTQ+ San Diego service members and veterans on the whole picture.
Military & veteran planning rolls up into the broader San Diego city plan, which covers city, state, and federal tax and legal context in more depth.
